The author M.B. Wood includes chapters on John Wood, Henry Wood, and James O. Wood. He also writes an autobiographical essay on his own life and a biographical essay on the life of his wife. The story of this family interacts with most of the interesting subjects in Virginia history: Seventeenth Century settlement of the family in Westmorland and Loudoun Counties; Indentured Servitude; Eighteenth Century struggles with the Shawnee Indians in the Border Wars on the western frontier; Settlement of the family at Ft. Houston, on Big Moccasin Creek in Scott County, Virginia; the Revolutionary War and the battle of King's Mountain; Service in the Virginia State Legislature; the Methodist Church in Virginia; Slavery; Service in the Confederate Army; Reconstruction politics; etc.

Also in this interesting volume are birth, marriage, & death dates copied from the family bible for numerous Wood family members (and also for individuals with the related family names of Livingston, Ewing, Larkin, Lawson, Taylor, Wilcox, Godsey, Osborn, Morison, Dinwiddie, Smithson, Davidson). This information copied from the WOOD FAMILY BIBLE includes the names and birth dates of 23 AFRICAN AMERICAN SLAVES (including slaves listed with surnames of Taylor, Creigh, Walker, Johnson, & Preston).
