RARE 1899 ILLUSTRATED US ARMY NAVY HISTORY CD
An ARCHIVAL CD ROM--of a rare old 241 page bound volume,
Lt. Col Arthur L. Wagner and Com. J. D. Jerrold Kelley, THE UNITED STATES ARMY AND
NAVY. Akron OH, The Werner Company, 1899. 43 Color Plates,; 241 p.; The Country's
Defensive Forces in War and Peace. Their Histories from the Era of the Revolution to the Close
of the Spanish-American War, with Accounts of their Organization, Administration and Duties.
With appendices enumerating the principal ships of the U. S. Navy.
BEAUTIFULLY ILLUSTRATED history of American wars from Revolution through the
Spanish American War, with 25 FULL-COLOR LITHOGRAPHS OF ARMY SCENES AND 18
OF NAVAL SCENES: battles, uniforms, landscapes, warships, artillery. Army history written by
Lt. Col. Wagner; Navy history written by Commander Kelley.
The Werner Company of Akron was at the forefront of new developments in printing technology
at the end of the 19th century. Chromolithographic color plates depict the uniforms of officers
and non-commissioned officers and the changes to the uniform through time for both Army and
Navy, 1776-1899. Appendices enumerating the principal ships of the United States Navy, their
batteries and armor, and official reports of the Battle of Manila and the action off Santiago De
Cuba. Much on the Indian Wars including four full-color lithographs depicting the U.S. Army
either attacking or being attacked by Indians. One full color lithograph entitled "U.S. Army -
Custer Massacre At Big Horn, Montana - June 25, 1876," was prepared especially for this
publication and does not appear elsewhere. Also much on the Spanish-American War including
full reports of activities. At the back is a complete list of ships of the U.S. Navy, including
specifications on batteries, armor, engines, and date of launching.
Relatively few copies of this book have survived intact over the years, largely due to its size and
the overwhelming temptation to break up the book to gain the colorful plates.
The FORTY THREE magnificent chromolithograph illustrations look great on the computer
screen and each page can be
MAGNIFIED.
The CD runs under 4.0 or later versions of Netscape or Internet Explorer (on or
off-line). It navigates like a web site, but downloads are instantaneous. Minimum requirements
Windows 95, Pentium (or equivalent), 16 meg ram, 8x CD drive. Javascript must be enabled.
Best viewed at screen resolution of 800 x 600. The CD is available in very limited
