This is an ARCHIVAL CD ROM which contains a complete copy of the following HARD-TO-FIND REFERENCE BOOK FOR CIVIL WAR & MILITARY HISTORY:

UNITED STATES ARMY REGISTER OF OFFICERS for 1858, 48 pages, published by the official printer for the Adjutant General's Office, Washington, January 1, 1858, by order of the Secretary of War, in compliance with the Resolution of the Senate, December 13, 1815, and Resolutions of the House of Representatives, February 1, 1830, and August 30, 1842.

Most of the important officers who fought for the North and the South in the upcoming War Between the States are listed in this book (see below), a fine reference for Civil War and military research. Also useful for genealogy.

This register lists the name, rank, date of commission, brevets & former commissions, the date of first appointment of continuous service, the state born & the state from which appointed--for all officers of the US Army. Each officer is listed by the department or regiment to which he was assigned including: General Staff, Adjutant General Department, Inspector General Department, Quartermaster Department, Subsistence Department, Medical Department, Pay Department, Corps of Engineers, Corps of Topographical Engineers, Ordinance Department, Dragoon Regiments, Cavalry Regiments, Regiment of Mounted Riflemen, Artillery Regiments, and Infantry Regiments.

Also included in this book are:
the relative regimental ranks of all officers, resignations and casualties during the year 1857, a general abstract of the Militia Force of the United States, the organization of the Regular Army, pay of the Army, the Military Academy at West Point, NY, distribution of the troops (in all forts across the US), armories & arsenals, and military geographical departments.
At the back of the book is an alphabetical index for all officers in the US Army in 1858.

The original copy of the 1858 Army Register from which this CD was made belonged to James W. Forsyth who served with distinction in the Army of the Potomac during the Civil War and later in the Indian Wars (including a prominent role in the "battle" of Wounded Knee.)
