OLD PHOTOS OF c1930s PAN AMERICAN AIRLINES INC AIRPLANE
TWO interesting old 8 x 10” black & white glossy photographs of early aircraft, as follows:
--In the first photo, the PAN AMERICAN AIRWAYS INC LOGO with WINGED GLOBE is nicely visible on the side of the airplane, and on the underside of the wing and on the tail is printed “NC 9726”. This photo came with some other aviation photos from Kelly Field, Texas, but there are no markings or labels on the front or back of the photograph as to location (but written on the reverse in ink is “Property of Joe Kemisky(?), Inc.” Lower left corner missing, some spots, small tears, crazing, etc., on the surface of this old photo (see scan) otherwise good condition. This plane was apparently one of a fleet of Fairchilds of various marques used by PAA on some of the Air Mail routes within South and Central America. By 1929 the airline was flying regularly from Miami, throughout the Caribbean, and down to the Panama Canal Zone. Various sources identify this plane as a Fairchild 71, Pan American Grace Airlines, Panama, sold Mexico, NC9726 X-ABCF. Apparently on 15 June 1929, this plane CRASHED IN THE PANAMA CANAL ZONE, but no details are available.
--The second photograph is somewhat harder to identify. I’ve not been able to find anything about the registration number written on the tail, which appears to be “1283 R”. On the side of the plane is printed AIA “American International” Airline(?). The airplane appears to be a two-engine biplane with wing struts, which perhaps resemble those used on a Bellanca aircraft. There are some old stains and crazing on the surface of this photo (see scan), otherwise good condition.
Both these old aviation photographs bear further research.
