OLD PAMPLET / BROCHURE -- 1859 BOSTON EXHIBITION OF JOHN SINGLETON COPLEY PAINTING
A rare and ephemeral 10-page exhibition booklet (5 ¾ 9 ½”) for:
COPLEY’S PICTURE OF KING CHARLES THE FIRST DEMANDING IN THE HOUSE OF COMMONSTHE FIVE IMPEACHED MEMBERS A.D. 1641-42. Now Exhibiting at the room sof Williams & Everett, 234 Washington Street, Boston, for the benefit of the City Public Library. Boston: William White, Printer, 4 Spring Lane, 1859.

The yellow paper wraps (covers) of this old pamphlet are present but detached and badly chipped around the edges (see scan). Some of the interior pages are stained and torn, but the pamphlet is complete and contains a thorough description (much in Copley’s own words) of this historical painting by the famous Revolutionary War era American artist John Singleton Copley. The text describes all the details of Copley’s painting and even includes a 9 ½ x 14” fold-out plate locating (with heads) the 58 famous Englishman that Copley included in his painting.

This old paper pamphlet is a scarce record of an exhibition in American Art History that merits further research. It would be interesting to find out the location of this Copley oil painting today.

Price= $65.00
