1865 PHILADELPHIA PA CIVIL WAR HOSPITAL BOOK

Written in ink in the back of this interesting old book is:

CHESTNUT HILL HOSPITAL
MAY 18, 1865
MANY THANKS TO THE DONOR,
SOLDIER

Apparently this old book was donated to the Chestnut Hill Hospital of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania during the Civil War. There it was read by at least one soldier who must have been recuperating from war wounds or sickness just a few weeks after Appomattox. He was moved to record this simple inscription of thanks in the back of the book.

The 4 x 6” little book is: “JESUS ONLY by J. Oswald Jackson from the London Edition. With an Introduction by Rev. Charles D. Cooper, Rector of St. Philip’s Church, Phila. Philadelphia, Protestant Episcopal Book Society, 1224 Chestnut Street, 1860.”

The book is in quite poor condition. The pages are disbound from their worn covers, the front & end papers are missing, as are eight pages right after the title page (see scan below). There is also some scribbling throughout the book. The name E. N. Biddle is written several times inside the front cover. The rough condition of this ephemeral old relic shows that the book was carried and well read by the soldiers in this famous Civil War Hospital.
