OLD 1818 VICTOR NEW YORK ONTARIO COUNTY LAND DEED

Interesting old 22 November 1815 quit claim land deed / indenture (measures about 13.5 x 17”) between Joel Scudder of Victor & Cornelius Covenhoven of Farmington, Ontario County, New York Deed is signed at bottom by Isaac Scudder, Leander Scudder, Thomas Wright, Cornelius Covenhoven and Margaret Covenhoven. On the back it is signed by Timothy Bernard. The Scudders were early settlers in this area located near ROCHESTER in NY State). Deed is part manuscript & part printed.

JOEL SCUDDER (1793-1866) was the son of Ezekiel Scudder, & born in Victor, NY. He served in the War of 1812, married Hannah Cronk, and engaged in farming. In 1830 they moved to Randolph, where he opened a tavern. He later removed to Carroll, Chautauqua County for ten years and kept a hotel.

Timothy Barnard of Mendon, NY, was the first postmaster, and was head of the local Revolutionary War veterans. He had known the marquis de Lafayette during the war, and met the marquis again during his visit to America in 1825. Barnard (c1755-1847) married Phoebe Dewey and emigrated with his family from the city of Hartford, CT to the town of Mendon in Ontario (later Monroe County) NY.

This ephemeral old document has a few small holes & tears at the 3 center fold-lines (see scan) and is worn around the edges, but is otherwise in good condition on paper of fine old rag content. This is an interesting & frame-able old document from the Rochester, Ontario County area of New York State. Scan shows front, most of reverse, & enlarged detail.
