1791 HANOVER COUNTY VA RECEIPT, WILLIAM POLLARD CLERK

This old manuscript document from Hanover County, Virginia, is written out in dark ink on a SMALL strip of paper about 2 x 6" (which is smaller than it appears in the scan below). It concerns a receipt for money paid the Clerk of Hanover County as follows:

“1791 Lucy Sharp Exectress & Abraham Netherland Executor of Robert Sharp deceased to the Clerk of Hanover. Execution & recording return against Huide(?) & Norvell. William Pollard, Clerk.”

A little rough along the left edge, but otherwise good condition as shown in scan, on nice old laid paper of good rag content.

The document appears to be signed at bottom by George William Pollard (1760-1840) who was the clerk of Hanover County from 1781 to 1824. He succeeded his father, William Pollard of Buckeye who had served as clerk from 1740 to 1781. Pollard built his home “WILLIAMSVILLE” in 1794. “He was a man of such accurate business methods in his work that he was called "Billy Particular." In 1786, he married his first wife Elizabeth Smelt, widow of Isaac Dabney. They had two children: Mary Anderson Pollard, who married John Darracott, and Elizabeth Smelt Pollard, who married Dr. Joseph M. Shepherd of Hanover County. His second wife was Elizabeth Dabney, widow of Lyn Shackleford. Elizabeth's brother. Their only child was George William Pollard who inherited Williamsville and lived there all his life. The location of Williamsville on the highest elevation in the vicinity made it the obvious location for headquarters for Generals Grant, Hooker and Meade during the prolonged attacks on Richmond during the Civil War.”

Abraham Netherland was born in 1775 in Virginia. He died on 28 Feb 1815 in Hanover County, Virginia. He married Nancy Saunders. They had the following children: John Netherland, Charles G. Netherland, George Saunders Netherland Sr., Abraham Carter Netherland.

Getting hard to find 18th century Virginiana, and this small document could also be of interest to family genealogists.
