SLAVES LISTED IN OLD 1848 MONROE COUNTY VA WV APPRAISAL
MONROE COUNTY, VIRGINIA (later West Virginia) court-ordered estate appraisal for the personal property of John Jones, deceased, 20 May 1848. FIVE large pages (7.75 x 12.5”) written in ink on attractive GREEN ledger paper.

On page 4, THREE AFRICAN AMERICAN SLAVES ARE LISTED as follows:
--1 Black Man (named Peter) $680.00
--1 ditto ditto (named Albert) $700.00
--1 ditto Woman (named Charlotte) $150.00

These three slaves are listed amidst a wide variety of other possessions including:
--Agricultural & Farm Items—Scythes, Mattock, Plows, Hoes, Axes, Horse Collars, Harrow, Wheelbarrow, Wagons, etc.
--Livestock—Shoats, Hogs, Bulls, Heifers, Calves, Sheep, Geese, 7 Horses, etc.
--Household items—Spinning Wheel, Skillet, Tea Kettle, Kitchen Table & Chairs, Writing Tables, Bureau, Wooden Clock, Cupboard & contents, pair of Firedogs, Candlestick, Looking Glass, Split Bottom Chairs, Windsor Chairs, Coffee Mill & Pots, Crocks, etc.
Also, a PAIR OF HORSE PISTOLS, and MUCH MORE.

At the end of the appraisal there are a list of debts owed by the deceased with a note to the effect that they were settled by Jesse Jones as of 22 February 1853.

This old appraisal is written on attractive light-green paper of good rag content. There are some brown stains on the paper, rough edges (see scan), and some splits and tears in the paper along the spine fold. Otherwise the old manuscript is in good condition. Scan shows first and 4th page.
