OLD c1890s MD DENTIST / DENTAL BROADSIDE showing TEETH
Ephemeral old dark-green advertising broadside / flyer / leaflet for DR. H. R. EAVEY’S PAINLESS DENTAL PARLORS, 109 S Potomac Street, HAGERSTOWN, MARYLAND. Measures about 5 ½ x 9 ¼” Includes a detailed price list and some quite impressive ILLUSTRATIONS OF TEETH.
This old broadside was printed by Parkhurst & Co., Printers, 212 Clay St., Baltimore, MD.
“TEETH EXTRACTED POSITIVELY WITHOUT PAIN BY THE USE OF VITALIZED AIR . . . NO COCAINE or injurious drugs . . . suitable for DELICATE LADIES and children . . . Chloroform administered when parties desire it . . . We are no floating dentists, we are here to stay.”
Slight raggedness and some discoloration around edges, tips of upper & lower right corners torn off (see scan), o/w quite good condition. The old paper has good rag content and is not at all brittle.
“The emergence of dentistry as a scientific discipline is relatively recent. The itinerant dentist, himself only a generation or two remote from his fairground forebear, was a recognized figure of the early part of the 19th century. In remote areas in America he traveled with a trade card or handbill in which space for the name of the town was left blank for filling in on arrival. The profession contended with ignorance and the inadequacies of techniques. Developments in anesthesia were slow. Prosthesis for long remained experimental.”
Herman R. Eavey graduated the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery in 1895. He was practicing in Hagerstown from that date at least through 1928. He was not an itinerate dentist.
“Work on the control of caries, general preventive dentistry, and orthodontics did not begin seriously until the first quarter of the 20th century. The rise of dentistry as a profession was reflected in a prolific output of publicity material containing many protestations of painlessness and efficiency. Promotion material like this example graphically conveys this story.”
