OLD 1836 SDUK MAP OF THE CITY OF LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND

Beautiful old copper engraved map. Hand colored green & blue and outlined in red. "LIVERPOOL Reduced by permission from Mr. Gage's elaborate survey. Published under the superintendence of the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge.” Printed / Engraved by T. Starling. Published by Baldwin & Cradock, 47 Paternoster Row, September 1836. This map is from the first edition of the 2-volume SDUK atlas. Maps were issued in parts over several years and bound as a two volume set. This map measures about 13¾ x 16”. There are just a few small edge tears, otherwise quite good condition as shown in the LARGE scan below.

Along the upper margin is an inset map: “Plan of Liverpool in the year 1729” by way of comparison, and also two inset views: View of Liverpool in the year 1650 -- The Black Rock Lighthouse. Along the lower margin are views of the facades of 15 municipal and notable buildings of Liverpool. The city is shown south to north from the docks to the Necropolis and west to east from Vauxhall Road to Dr Hughes’ Stone Quarries.

The attractive vignettes and the great details of streets, topography, and major buildings was a decorative & informative accomplishment for the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge (SDUK), which was devoted to the spreading of up-to-date information and the enhancing of geographical understanding. The Society was founded in 1826, with its object: 'the imparting useful information to all classes of the community, particularly to such as are unable to avail themselves of experienced teachers, or may prefer learning by themselves.' It sought to achieve this object by acting as the intermediary between authors and publishers in several different and often ambitious series of publications. In 1829 there were 515 annual subscribers to the Society but that number fell to 49 by 1842. The Society's active life lasted until 1846 and its affairs were wound up in 1848.
