WILLIAMSON DAGUERREOTYPE – MOTHER & CHILD BROOKLYN NY
A quarter-plate daguerreotype photograph (3 x 4.25”) from the famed Williamson Gallery of Brooklyn, New York.
CHARLES H. WILLIAMSON began daguerreotyping for Marcus Root in Philadelphia c1849-50. He opened a gallery in Brooklyn from 1851 to 1859. Little research has yet been done on his operation. His brother's name was Edward M. Williamson. Together, the Williamson brothers became two of the finest daguerreian artists in America and consistently produced superior work. They invented what they called a "Cameotype" daguerreotype and were generally superb colorists. Their beautiful MADONNA-LIKE portraits of mothers holding their faces close beside their children—as seen in this daguerreotype—were characteristically and consistently, outstanding works of art. This specialty pose is a shared feature between many daguerreotypes from their gallery, and their body of such work might be considered somewhat akin to the work of the late-19th century American painter Mary Cassatt.
This daguerreotype is housed in:
--The original full leather push-button case (some scuffs on the outside and the top portion of the case is detached along the spine from the bottom portion),
--A brass mat (stamped “Williamson Brooklyn, NY), and
--A brass preserver.
--The original seal is present but NOT intact.
As shown accurately in the image at top of the scan below, this daguerreotype has rather severe TARNISH AND SPOTTING. The second image in the scan (lit differently) illustrates something of the excellence of the image (when a fine daguerreotype is turned in direct light there are a number of possible reflections).
A deficiency would exist in any collection of daguerreian artistry lacking an example of the work produced by the Williamson Gallery.
