1880 FOLK ART PENCIL DRAWING OF A BOY IN A HORSE STABLE

Quite a nicely drawn old PENCIL DRAWING about 7.5 x 11.75” and a fine example of American folk art c1880. The scene two stabled work-horses, with a stable hand working on a harness. A little boy looks on. Tack hangs on the wall.

This old drawing was originally found in the Lynchburg, Virginia area. The sketch was made on drawing paper the consistency of light cardboard. The sketch does not appear to be signed but there is a penciled date in the lower right corner, which appears to be Oct. 2d ’80 (see scan), & this art work has the appearance of having been drawn “FROM LIFE” on that day.

The drawing has a little discoloration around the edges where it was once apparently framed. Also there are wood-stains on the back that have bled through from a backing board in the original frame. There are a few water stains visible on the back side (see bottom of scan) that are not visually apparent on the front side of the sketch. The drawing is generally in quite good contrast and condition on sturdy old drawing paper. With a good frame, this old art-work would make quite a charming display to hang in any room. Scan shows front and reverse of the drawing and enlarged detail.
