OLD 1891 C R REES CABINET PHOTO OF PETERSBURG VA MASON
1891 Cabinet-style portrait photograph 4 ¼ x 6 ½” by
photographer C. R. Rees of 223 Sycamore Street, Petersburg, Virginia. A gentleman poses dressed in full fraternal
regalia—apparently MASONIC—including a sword & apron. The skull and crossbones in the center of
the apron “are a continual reminder that the spiritual nature attains
liberation only after the philosophical death of man’s sensuous personality.”
There is a name written in pencil on the reverse but it is
hard to read (possibly “Mrs. Bettie Ryland”).
Charles R. Rees and his brother Edward were notable photographers of
Confederate soldiers in Richmond during the Civil War.
Photo has good contrast but some spots, etc. Upper corners of the cardboard mount have
been clipped for insertion into a photo album, and there are spots and stains,
etc., (and even part of an old envelope stuck) on the reverse (see scan).
Price= $95.00
