OLD CHARCOAL FOLK ART DRAWING COWS, RIVER & SAWMILL
This old CHARCOAL DRAWING 12.5 x 19” is just a great example
of American folk art c1900. The scene
shows three cows standing on a grassy bluff near a forest on the right side of
the picture. A wide, placid stream
separates them from an elaborate sawmill & dam complex. The drawing came out of the Lynchburg,
Virginia area, but I am not sure whether or not this was drawn of an actual
mill or is just an imagined scene. The
drawing is made on paper that is quite heavy & rather rough texture. It does not appear to be signed anywhere.
There is a small visible water stain in the lower left
corner, a number of mostly short tears running in from the top and left edge of
the paper (one of these has been taped on the reverse), and the edge of the
paper is slightly bent & broker at the upper right (see scan). Nevertheless, the drawing is generally in
good contrast and condition on sturdy old drawing paper. With a little repair
and a good frame, this old art-work would make quite a charming display to hang
in any room. Scan shows front and
reverse of the drawing (two scans stitched together—so there is a line running
vertically down through the picture), and enlarged detail.
