WINSLOW HOMER ART IN AN 1862 CIVIL WAR HARPER’S WEEKLY
Excellent
FULL-page engraving: “THE SKATING SEASON 1862,” one of
WINSLOW HOMER’S Civil War wood engravings is included in this COMPLETE issue of
Harper’s Weekly from 18 January 1862.
The Homer engraving measures 9 x 14” with at least 1” margins on every
side. This issue of Harper’s
Weekly. Journal of Civilization, measures about 11 ½” x 16
3/4" has 16 pages, and is in the good condition shown in the scan. The edges are this issue of Harper’s are a
little ragged (see scan), but the pages still retains good strength and
tone—they have not become stained or brittle as do many Harper pages over
time. All pages are still intact along
the spine. The Homer engraving is in
quite good condition.
This
issue of Harpers also contains the following:
--There
are two front page illustration of “Port Royal Ferry,” and “Scene in the Parlor
of Mr. Barnwell’s House at Beaufort, South Carolina.” Inside, besides the Homer
engraving are the following illustrations:
--a
DOUBLE-page center illustration of a “MAP OF THE JAMES RIVER FROM
RICHMOND, VIRGINIA TO THE OCEAN & THE CITY OF RICHMOND, VIRGINIA
(engraving).” Almost no discoloration or deterioration at the center
fold line.
--a
FULL-page engravings of “THE VESSELS OF GENERAL BURNSIDES EXPEDITION
AT ANNAPOLIS.
--other
smaller engravings of ” THE ARMY
OF THE POTOMAC---BRINGING IN REBEL PRISONERS,” ”THE UNION PRISONERS AT RICHMOND,
VIRGINIA,” several of Burnside & his expedition, and many more.
There are string holes along the spine margins where the
issue was once bound into a larger volume of the newspapers. Scan shows front and back of the issue, the
half-page Homer engraving and enlarged detail, and a few of the other pages in
this paper with enlarged details. The
scans make the magazine look darker /more reddish than the actual paper.
