REAL PHOTO POSTCARD EMORY & HENRY COLLEGE BASEBALL TEAM c1915
A super REAL PHOTO POSTCARD of an early (c1915) EMORY & HENRY COLLEGE BASEBALLTEAM, from EMORY, VIRGINIA, posing with their BASEBALL EQUIPMENT prominently displayed in front. The equipment consists of over 30 bats, catcher’s equipment, and perhaps most interestingly, a full BOX OF BASEBALLS. This box clearly shows the label of D & M SPORTING GOODS – THE DRAPER MAYNARD COMPANY – “THE LUCKY DOG KIND” of “full size and weight.”
This postcard was once mounted in a Emory Henry College scrapbook from the era (see old black paper glue spots on reverse of the card). Several players in the photograph wear triangular felt(?) patches on the shoulder of their uniform which appear to have a stylized “EH” logo. Several others wear sweaters with similar letters. The letters “ACAD” can be seen on the uniform of a few others. One player wears a hat with an “E” on the front. Scan below shows the front & reverse of the postcard and some enlarged detail (a few scans are lightened to better show the letters “EH” which, along with many other small details, are more visible in the sharp original photo than in the scan).
“Draper-Maynard Company, Plymouth, NH. The partnership of Jason F. Draper (1850-1913) and John Maynard (1846-1937) began in Ashland, NH, in 1881 with the production of buckskin gloves, an industry which was already well established in the Ashland-Plymouth area. Just one year later, the firm became a pioneer in the manufacture of baseball gloves when it produced a padded model at the suggestion of a baseball player. It is said to be the first company to design gloves for specific fielding positions. Upon moving to a new factory in Plymouth in 1900, the Draper-Maynard Company became a major supplier of baseball equipment for both amateur and professional teams. A new trademark was soon adopted, depicting Maynard's bird dog, Nick (the "Lucky Dog"). Production of baseball equipment reached a peak in the 1920s, when the company claimed that over 90% of major league players used Draper-Maynard gloves. The business closed in 1937 after the death of Maynard, who had survived his partner by 24 years.”
