RARE ELLEN GLASGOW PHOTOS, BOOK PLATE & MEMORABILIA
Ellen Anderson Gholson Glasgow (April 22, 1873-November 21, 1945) was a Pulitzer Prize winning American novelist. Born in Richmond, VA, she published her first novel, The Descendant, in 1897, when she was 24 years old. With this novel, Glasgow began a literary career encompassing four and a half decades that comprised 20 novels, a collection of poems, short stories, and a book of literary criticism.
This lot of SIX (6) items were purchased together in Fredericksburg, VA and all seem to relate to Virginia novelist Ellen Glasgow. The items are as follows:
TWO photographs at least one of which might possibly be an UNPUBLISHED photographs of Ellen Glasgow herself.
1--The first photograph (about 4.5 x 6.5) is an original silver(?) print, housed in a commercial studio folder c1905, that bears the embossed photographers logo of W. W. FOSTER, RICHMOND, VA. The tan or light-brown colored portfolio folder measures about 9.25 x 13.25, is partially (20%) split along the seam, has a corner clipped & damaged on upper right of front page, and has various spots & stains throughout. The actual bust-style photograph of a woman with her hair put-up is in is in excellent condition with fine contrast. Scan shows the folder, the photo, & details. the woman looks quite like Ellen Glasgow herself, but whether or not it is the famous writer herself, its inclusion as found with the other items in this lot imply it is from her family.
2--The second photograph (8 x 10) is an original un-mounted print with no photographers name or other mark of identification. It shows a woman standing full length between two drapes wearing a dress that is almost mid-19th century in style. The photograph probably dates to c1915-1920s and is quite excellent in composition, contrast, and condition. Scan shows the photo & detail.
3Another photograph of less discernable tie to Ellen Glasgow is identified on the reverse in ink as a portrait of EDWARD BRITTINGHAM SMOOT AGE 4 MONTHS. The picture of this baby measures about 2.75 x 4 and is mounted on a heavy paper / cardboard mount 7 x 9.25. Other than the written note of identification on the reverse, there is no other information as to the photographer, etc. The upper right corner of the mount is broken off, but again, the photograph itself is in quite good condition. Edward Brittingham SMOOT was born about 1899 in Wilmington, North Carolina. His father was Rev. Thomas Arthur Smoot and his mother was Leila Gilchrist McGirt. Scan shows front & reverse of photo.
4A fine copy of THE FREEMAN AND OTHER POEMS by Ellen Glasgow. Book Description: New York, Doubleday, Page, & Co., 1902., 1902. First edition. Slim 8vo. Hardcover (brown paper-covered boards, printed paper spine-label), 56 pp.. Printed by the De Vinne Press. One of Glasgow's scarcest works, and very difficult to find in good condition. This copy has lost the small (1/4) section above the printed label at the top of the spine (see scan). There is a small amount of wear along the bottom edges of the book. Otherwise it is a clean, fine copy. Most (28 of 30) of the pages are UNOPENED and pristine, that is, uncut & still joined along the top edge of the page. Scan shows spine & both sides of the book.
5Highly unusual vintage PROOF example BOOKPLATE designed for Ellen Glasgow by Dugald Stewart Walker and signed in pencil by him. The book plate measures about 3 x 3.25, the engraving plate impression measures about 5.5 x 7.25, and the vellum-style paper measures about 9 x 12. Near fine condition.
DUGALD STEWART WALKER (1883 1937) was an early twentieth century illustrator. He was a native of Richmond, Virginia, and studied in Virginia and at the New York School of Design. His work was noted for its fine detail, elaborate stippling, and lavish design.
He was best known as a children's book illustrator but did do about forty bookplates. In the book A Directory of Bookplate Artists With Notes Concerning Their Work, edited and compiled by Alfred Fowler, Kansas City 1921, Dugald Stewart Walker explained:
My bookplates are in pen and ink. The cost is from $100.00 to $250.00. I have been making bookplates for ten years." Scan shows the full paper, bookplate & signature, & detail of the bookplate.
6Rolled-up copy of Ellen Glasgow's Virginia. (n.p.): Ruth Jones Wilkins, 1951. A map placing Glasgow's novels in Virginia, with their time periods, and a key listing novels with Richmond scenes, apparently produced as a tourist item. The print is black, green & red, and measures about 11.25 x 17.75. This copy has a 2 tear in from the left side and is otherwise rather worn from being rolled up for many years.
Scan shows the 6 items with some enlarged details.
An excellent collection of Ellen Glasgow related memorabilia.
