EARLY 1839 GREENE COUNTY VA DOCUMENT ORANGE CHURCH ROAD

This old one-page GREENE COUNTY, VIRGINIA document 6 x 8” is quite early for Greene County which was only established in 1838 from Orange County. The document is an order appointing citizens to work on a public road running from the “Orange Church” to the Greene County line. Transcribed as follows:

March term, 1839
Ordered that the hands of Ezekiel Lucas, Silverton C. Blakely, John Pitman, E. J. Williams, James Eagan, Robert Carr, Robert Carr, Jr., Fielding Powell, Albert Howell, John M. Carr, & Simon Powell, and they are hereby assigned to the ROAD FROM THE ORANGE CHURCH TO THE DIVIDING LINE BETWEEN THE COUNTIES OF GREENE & ORANGE.
