OLD 1952 DEMOCRAT POLITICAL CONVENTION SCORECARD
YOU ARE THERE! A FILLED IN scorecard for the balloting at the 1952 Democratic National Presidential Convention in Chicago, IL. This is a large 11 x 13 ˝" CARDBOARD SCORECARD evidently issued to the delegates by NEWSWEEK. On one side in large red and black letters on a white background the card reads ”Newsweek--know the POLITICAL SCORE--follow newsweek”. On the other side is a chart for recording the balloting. It reads at top:
“Newsweek’s Democratic Convention Score Card. How to use this scorecard: As each state delegation votes, mark number in left column of spaces under candidates names. Keep running total to show where candidates stand during balloting. To win, a candidate needs minimum of 616 votes.”
Down the right side all states and territories are listed. Across the top there are columns for four (4) ballots. The following names of candidates are listed: BARKLEY, HARRIMAN, KEFAUVER, KERR, RUSSELL, and then a space is left blank. This ballot score card is filled out in pencil all the way through the 3rd Ballot. Quite interesting to see the progress of the Convention through this ephemeral surviving item.
Score card has severe crease where it has been folded in half. There is a hole at the bottom of the score card where it probably fit onto something. The bottom of this part of the scorecard is torn. Penciled notes scribbled in various places on the card where it was passed between the delegates. Neat old item!
