Interesting group of EIGHT pieces of old correspondence from the N & W Railroad Company during the years of 1883-1884. Four are handwritten, four are typewritten, all measure about 8.5 x 11”and are 1-page letters. Seven have various attractive printed letterhead of the “NORFOLK & WESTERN RAILROAD COMPANY, while one has letterhead of the Virginia, Tennessee, and Georgia Airline. Two letters are signed by Treasurer Charles J. Eastwick, two are written (in attractive purple ink) and signed by N. M. Osborne, Superintendent. There is one letter from Joseph Doran, Solicitor, W. T. Payne, Agent, William G. McDowell, Comptroller, and G. R. W. Armes, Treasurer.

The content of these letters seem to mostly concern insurance coverage for the destruction of lumber & cotton stored in a warehouse. There was a warehouse fire along the docks at Norfolk, Virginia on 14 November 1883. Some of the letters are worn & creased especially around the edges (see scan) but are generally in pretty good condition on paper of fine rag content.
