SIGNED MOVIE STAR JEAN HARLOW PHOTO, XMAS CARD, TELEGRAM
JEAN HARLOW--THE PLATINUM GIRL / BLONDE BOMBSHELL. This classic movie star died a tragic early death in 1937. Surrounded by rumor and innuendo in the 1930s, at least 3 full-length biographies of Jean Harlow have appeared since the 1960s. Her life remains quite controversial, but the impact of her legend as America’s first “Sex Goddess” continues unabated.
There are THREE RARE ITEMS IN THIS AUCTION LOT related to Jean Harlow:
--The FIRST item in this lot is a rare, vintage 1930s black & white photograph 7.25 x 9.25" of Jean wearing her bathing suit, standing and laughing in a relaxed moment. This authentic, period photograph is signed and inscribed in dark ink: “Mr. Shaffer, This is an enlarged snap shot taken at the pool – Like it? Sincerely Jean Harlow.” Kinsloe F. (Frank) Shaffer ran the Virginia Theater in Harrisonburg, Virginia in the 1930s. THIS PHOTO WAS APPARENTLY SIGNED BY JEAN HARLOW’S MOTHER AND NOT BY THE ACTRESS HERSELF. Actual autographs of the actress are extremely rare and command thousands of dollars on a photo of this vintage nature. The actress herself was kept quite busy making films during the 1930s and left virtually all “fan mail” up to her mother. Vintage, period signed photos even by her mother are apparently still relatively rare since the untimely death of the actress cut her career quite short. Her fame while alive was packed into about 5 short years from 1932-37. Her posthumous fame has continued to grow for 60 years.
This fine photograph is in quite good condition, but may be trimmed a bit around the edges.
--The SECOND item in this lot is a 6 x 8" CHRISTMAS CARD from Jean Harlow to Frank Shaffer with a nice holiday forest scene and the name “JEAN HARLOW” embossed in the white card. The stamped envelope is postmarked Beverly Hills, CA 18 December 1936. On the back side of this envelope “J H, METRO - GOLDWYN - MAYER, CULVER CITY, CALIF” is embossed in raised white letters. The Christmas card is in quite good condition. There are two holes punched in the side of the envelope, which is otherwise in good condition, and opened along the top.
--The THIRD and final item in this lot is an original old 1936 W UNION TELEGRAM 6.5 x 8” sent from Jean Harlow (her mother?) to Frank Shaffer. The telegram reads:
“Frank Shaffer—Virginia Theatre, Thank you for your letter Frank. Hope that you and all of Harrisonburg will like “Riff Raff.” Stop It was a grand cast to work with and I enjoyed the characterization because I believed Hattie to be sincere. Stop Best to you and your patrons, Jean Harlow.” The telegram is somewhat torn around the edges (see scan) but is otherwise still in good condition. With the telegram is its original envelope with glassine window. The flap is torn off the envelope and missing as shown in scan below.
The scan below shows the signed photo with enlarged detail, Xmas card with enlarged detail & envelope, and front & back of the telegram & its envelope.
