1890 PHOTO UVA PROFESSOR NOAH DAVIS CHARLOTTESVILLE VA
Fine & rare old c1890 Cabinet Card photograph 4 ¼ x 6 ½” of a man identified on the reverse as: NOAH K DAVIS, PROFESSOR OF MORAL PHILOSOPHY UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA.
Noah Knowles Davis was born at Philadelphia, PA, in 1830. He was educated at Mercer University, Penfield, GA. Many of his books were written for practical use in the schoolroom, such as Elements of Deductive Logic, Elements of Psychology, Elements of Inductive Logic, Elements of Ethics and Elementary Ethics. He was called to the chair of Moral Science at the University of Virginia in 1873. "Noah K. Davis was, in his imposing physical aspect, his slow gate, and solemn bearing, the impersonation of the old philosophers fo the classic age...Only two incumbents had occupied the chair of Moral Philosophy before Davis's election. These men, Henry St George Tucker (1780-1848) and William Holmes McGuffey (1800-1873), were known far beyond the precincts [of UVA]...From some points of view, however, Davis proved himself to be the superior of both … The Board of Visitors affirmed at his death ‘Not one of the great teachers of the University had served its life with more ability, distinction, and consecration.'"
This is a great character portrait photograph taken by Wampler Excelsior Art Gallery. Photograph is in quite good condition as shown in scan of front and reverse and enlarged detail below.
