AUTOGRAPH OF STONEWALL JACKSONS SURGEON, DOCTOR HARVEY BLACK

1879 SIGNED NOTE ON HIS MEDICAL BILL FORGIVING PAYMENT

An interesting autographed document that poignantly illuminates the inherent compassion & magnanimity that must have served Doctor Harvey Black well during the Civil War.

Dr. Harvey Black (1827-1888), famously served as one of Gen. Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson's surgeons, and participated in the amputation of the General's arm following the battle of Chancellorsville.

Written in ink on this lined white paper (about 8 x 12.5”) is Rev. William A. Wade’s itemized bill for medical services provided by Dr. Black. Numerous visits during the years 1865-1867, and per scripted medicines, are detailed on the front and continued on the back. Some of Blacks visits are to Wade’s wife and children, but at least one is to “negro woman Rachel.” Medicines & treatments mentioned include: magnesia, rhubarb, chalk, cupping, brandy, bay rum, turpentine, cayenne pepper, cream tarter, olive oil, gallicium, etc.

On the back of this document Black has written and signed the following in dark ink:
The Rev. W. A. Wade being engaged in the active work of the ministry the above balance is hereby canceled. The bond of $36.39 named in his statement cannot be found. While it is probably among my papers at Blacksburg, its payment is hereby acknowledged.
Williamsburg, VA
May 21, 1879
H. Black

The paper has a minor tear along the top edge, slight tears at each fold line along the right side and there is a 1” separation along one of the lower fold-lines on the left side (see scan). Otherwise this document is in good condition.
