SPANISH AMERICAN WAR TROOP MUSTER IN LYNCHBURG VA PHOTOGRAPH

This is actually just the most interesting photograph in a rather large lot of about 40 photographs purchased at a Lynchburg, Virginia estate auction a few years ago. Most of the others are just rather indifferent portraits, etc., and none appear to bear a family name. However, I include them with this interesting old Spanish American War photograph for provenance.

The Spanish American War photo measures about 3 x 4” and is mounted on cardboard measuring about 5 x 6”. I've been told that the building behind the troops is the Lynchburg City Armory, located on Church Street (trolley tracks visible). The intersection with 12th Street is behind the camera, and the view is taken toward the southeast IN LYNCHBURG, VA. Moreover, the family was from Lynchburg and more than 10 of the other photographs are marked with the logos of Lynchburg photographers. Another 7 of the photographs in this lot are from Richmond, Virginia photographers. There is a sign on a building in the muster photograph which clearly reads “VAN NESS MARBLE AND GRAPHITE WORKS.”

The image is a great one, with dozens of men arranged in a long line holding their muskets proudly at order arms while their officer stands in front of the line holding his saber. In the extreme right side of the photo a group of people can be seen, obviously spectators at this muster of troops for the war.

There is one other rather interesting photo in the collection that has a larger, but otherwise exactly identical cardboard mount to the Spanish American War photograph. This photo measures about 4.5 x 7” and is mounted on cardboard 7 x 9”. About 23 young men & women are shown posing for the photographer on a foot bridge built over a rocky stream. They appear well-dressed, perhaps for a Sunday picnic and many wear prominent RIBBONS pinned to their dresses & jackets.

The other photos are mostly cabinet cards and cardboard mounted photographs with about 9 snapshots, 1 carte de visite, and one tintype. Scan shows some of these photos but I think that most of the lot’s value rests in the interesting Spanish American War muster photo in downtown Lynchburg, Virginia. Scan shows all photos plus enlarged details of two.
