10 OLD 1884 PHOTOS FROM HAMPDEN SYDNEY COLLEGE VIRGINIA

An interesting & historical group of old photographs related to Hampden Sydney College. There are TEN early photographs that were found together in the same album (album is no longer extant) and apparently date to the year 1884. They are as follows:

--ONE larger cabinet card style photograph (4.25 x 6.5”) of a middle aged man who is quite likely a Professor. There are a minor horizontal scrapes across the face of the photograph, but it is otherwise in quite good condition. On the reverse is printed “L. D. Boyce, Artist Photographer, 156 Main Street, Norfolk, Virginia. HAMPDEN SIDNEY COLLEGE, DECEMBER 1884.”

--FOUR smaller carte de visite or CDV style photographs (2.5 x 4.25”) of 4 younger men who are likely students at the college. Each CDV is on a similar mount to the cabinet card photo of the professor and has the same information about the Norfolk photographer, Hampden Sydney College, and the date “1884” printed on the reverse. All are in quite good condition. In three of the four portraits the students appear to be wearing a FRATERNITY PIN.

--TWO similar CDV style photographs of young men who are likely students. Each is back marked “A. H. Plecker, 902 Main Street, Lynchburg, Virginia.” Each student wears a similar fraternity style pin as in the previous photographs. Both of these CDV photos appear to have possibly been trimmed slightly along the top edge (see scan), but are otherwise in good condition.

--ONE smaller cardboard mounted photograph (1.75 x 3.25”) also photographed by A. H. Plecker of Lynchburg, VA. This photo is a portrait of a young woman, but she also appears to be wearing one of the Hampden Sydney College fraternity pins as in the other photographs. Good condition.

--ONE CDV photograph of possibly another student also wearing one of the fraternity pins. This image has been cut down slightly along the lower edge (often photos were trimmed in this fashion for a better fit into the original CDV album). The photographers name and address are partially missing with only “42 N. Charles Street” still readable.

--ONE CDV photograph of a young man, possibly a student photographed by Davis of 827 Broad Street, Richmond, VA. Good condition.

This interesting group of photographs merit further research into there history and link to Hampden Sydney College in 1884.
