TWINS?
SUPER CONDITION DAGUERREOTYPES OF
BROTHER AND SISTER--TWINS??
Two sixth-plate daguerreotypes (each 2 3/4" x 3 1/4") in a full thermoplastic/union/gutta-percha
or "whatever you want to call it" case. Images of two children, a brother and sister, dressed
similarly and possibly TWINS. These are excellent daguerreotype images circa 1850. Both are
equally clear, sharp and contrasty. The children have fine presence and are posed in what is
probably the same chair. The exposure must have been quick but it captured a slight movement in
one arm of both children. The boy's left (to the viewer) hand is slightly blurred. The girl's same
arm moved slightly and the camera left a "ghost" image of her shoulder, forearm, and hand. This
is an interesting effect in its own right and could be considered a bit better than the usual "blur".
Nice as these images are visually, the really strong point of the package is in its condition.
The condition of this piece is a real joy. Probably as close as one gets after 160 years to
experience an image in almost the condition it was when taken. Neither daguerreotype has a
speck of tarnish. This is because of tight original seals, NOT because the images have been
chemically cleaned. There are slight mat rubs. The case which is collectible in its own right is
also in excellent condition, nearly mint. It is brown which is somewhat rarer than black for this
style case. The design mixes geometric and floral elements but also includes two tiny winged
cherubs heads . I just can't find any real damage or deterioration on images or case to
describe.
Price= $425.00 for pair of daguerreotypes
