POSTMORTEM DAGUERREOTYPE MOTHER HOLDS
BABY
Sixth plate daguerreotype (2 3/4 x 3 1/4") in broken half case (top
half of case is missing). Mother looks mournfully at camera, baby nestled in the crook of her arm.
The mother's expression and the fact that neither of her hands are holding her baby tell a clear
story. There is a touch of dark red tinting to two ribbons? on the baby's shoulders. The glass
over this image has been cleaned and the image resealed in 1992 and there is a "Scovill Extra"
platemark according to a note written on the back of the seal. There are tarnish lines at top and
bottom and lightly along the sides of the mat. THIS IMAGE HAS BEEN LIGHTLY RUBBED
so there are some vertical scratches across most of the surface of the image. THIS DAMAGE
DOES NOT SHOW UP WELL IN THE SCANS BELOW. However, most of the scratches are
light and do not detract too much from the visual power of the image. There is one deeper rub
mark to the right of the mother's head which is visible in the scan.
