OLD CIVIL WAR ENGRAVING PETERSBURG TRENCHES

NICE old large steel plate engraving 16 x 21” entitled THE FEDERAL ARMY ENTRENCHED BEFORE PETERSBURG.—A NIGHT SCENE IN THE TRENCHES. From a sketch by Edwin Forbes. This is a double page engraving from the post Civil War book “THE SOLDIER IN OUR CIVIL WAR”. It is in good condition with neatly trimmed edges—see the scan below which shows the whole (large) print (poorly) and enlarged detail.

On the reverse of this old print are two other engravings of the fighting around Petersburg, Virginia in 1864. They are also shown at the bottom of the scan below. On one side of the reverse of this print is a full-page engraving (10 ˝ x 16”) of ROEMER’S THIRTY-FOURTH NEW YORK AND TWITCHELL’S SEVENTH MAINE BATTERIES, THIRD DIVISION, NINTH ARMY CORP, SHELLING PETERSBURG, VA. From a sketch by A. McCallum. Text on the other side describes the Siege of Petersburg and has a partial-page engraving showing THE FOURTY-EIGHT PENNSYLVANIA, COLONEL PLEASANTS, MINING THE CONFEDERATE WORKS IN FRONT OF PETERSBURG, JULY 15TH – 20TH, 1864. This was the famous Battle of the Crater.
