1871 LETTER FITCHBURG RR TELEGRAPH OPERATOR IRISH HUMOR

TWO old letters with stamped envelopes. Both letters are written by Frank G. Dickey to his friend Alfronzo S. Richards of Brookline, MA. Dickey writes one letter as a Telegraph Operator at the Charlestown Station of the Fitchburg Railroad in Charlestown, Massachusetts. Each of the letters are about 2 pages long, & written in ink on white-lined paper 5 x 8”. Both have interesting content and are in good condition with their original stamped covers. All hunkey. Got here all right. Got a staving good boarding place and I guess I shall like very well after I get fully acquainted with the folks. Have not had time to look round the city much but will look round some Sunday. I work within a stone’s throw of the STATE PRISON AND CAN SEE THE SENTINELS & GUARDS out every little while.

I like to have died this pm to hear a POLICEMAN TELLING HOW AN OLD IRISHMAN COMPLAINED TO HIM of some boys that had been disturbing him. The little ‘divils’ he said were ‘raisin hill’ and the Divil was father to the whole of em, and a lot more lingo. The Policeman could talk just like him & you would think you was listening to an Irishman.

Have not heard of any vacant place down here yet. Will let you know when I do. Write often as you can.

The Musical Association had a meeting this afternoon and decided to have a GRAND LEVEE AND PROMENADE CONCERT next week. Thursday night in the Town Hall and we want you to make it in your way to come over about that time and stay two or three days or longer if possible. The Bills will not be out before Saturday and I will try and get one to send you. We expect to dance about 3 hours and have the Orchestra that played for the GRAND ARMY to play for us. Music by the Band. Free Table. Ice Cream, Oysters &c for Sale. We will have a staving good time I guess.

Walter is off up Manchester & Derry way now with some of his relatives. I had a letter from him yesterday and wrote him right back last night so that he could be on his way home in season for the ‘show.’ I began this letter last evening and here it is 6:30 this morning (the 1st of Mar) before I have had time to finish it. Come over if you can. Let me hear from you any so to know what to expect. Your friend,
Frank G. Dickey
