DEANNA DURBIN MOVIE ACTRESS PUBLICITY STILL c1930s

Attractive old COLOR portrait (8 x 10”) of quite a YOUTHFUL DEANNA DURBIN, the famous Hollywood movie star, who at the age of 27—and at the height of her popularity—turned her back on it all for a life of seclusion. For 50 years, Deanna resisted all enticements to return to Hollywood and the last interview she gave was in 1949. Deanna is so young in this undated picture, I feel fairly certain that it dates to the late 1930s but could possibly be early 1940s. She wears a pink dress and matching hair bow. There is a facsimile signature in the lower right corner, as well as the printed information: “NEW UNIVERSAL PICTURE STAR.” Two old thumbtack holes at top center, but the picture is otherwise in good condition (see scan).

Deanna Durbin shared the Academy Award's 1939 Juvenile Award with Mickey Rooney for her fine singing and acting. She was one of the most popular performers of her day. Deanna was, by nature, a very private individual. Though uncomfortable with the publicity afforded stardom, she turned out many hits that kept the movie going public enthralled. Deanna's final film was in 1948 whereupon she just simply walked away from Hollywood forever.
