OLD 1846 PRINTED TARIFF SPEECH, CHARLES HUDSON OF MA

“SPEECH OF MR. C. HUDSON, OF MASSACHUSETTS, ON THE TARIFF, Delivered in the House of Representatives of the U. S. June 29, 1846, 16-pages, 5.5 x 8.5”, J. & G.S. Gideon printer. Old writing in dark ink & other stains on first page. Front paper wrap appears to have been cut-off about 1 ¼” from the left edge. Back paper wrap is addressed to Amos Lauren, Boston, MA & missing a large hunk in upper right (see scan). Hudson appears to be arguing for the tariff which he believes will bring further prosperity to America. The tariff was a main bone of contention between the North & South leading up to the Civil War.

Charles Hudson (1795—1881) was a Representative from Massachusetts from 1841 to 1849. He also served in the War of 1812; studied theology; was ordained as a Universalist minister, authored religious textbooks, served as naval officer of the port of Boston 1849-1853; edited the Boston Daily Atlas, etc.
